L.A. Woman:
Victoria, Victoria Beckham Spring 2013
by Esther Adams
Walking to the beat of remixed eighties hip-hop, the models at the Victoria, Victoria Beckham spring presentation stomped around Milk Studios in abbreviated shifts splashed with hazy SoCal palms and sunsets. “This is the closest I came to a summer holiday,” said the designer with a laugh, gesturing toward those photo-realistic prints, before adding: “Everyone asks if living in L.A. has influenced my collections, and I’ve said no, until now. Here you really feel that cool, L.A. attitude.”
Structured dresses cut from a textural mix of lace, suede, and silk intended as day shifts were anything but laid-back and would work equally well for evening. But giving VVB that simple, focused silhouette, says the designer, allows her to push her main collection in an entirely other direction. The graphic tailoring seen on the Victoria Beckham runway, for instance, was paired with mannish brogues by Manolo Blahnik. That combination couldn’t have been more different from the sixties-inspired dresses here, worn with hyper-elevated Walter Steiger flatforms (which proved difficult for models to navigate corners in). “I don’t think of this as a second line, and I don’t want to compromise on quality,” said Beckham of her fierce commitment to both endeavors. “Each collection strengthens the other.”
