The Little Black Jacket: Chanel's Clasic Revisited

Models, celebrities, and designers packed into the Swiss Institute’s loft-like gallery space in New York’s SoHo to fete the opening of an exhibition of photographs from the book The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s Classic Revisited, which is due out in August. From Alexander Wang and Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz to Lily Collins and Jessica Paré, fashion and Hollywood’s bold-faced names braved the spotty weather to support Karl Lagerfeld, who photographed all of the subjects in the new release, styled by Carine Roitfeld. “I still have to get mine autographed,” said Joan Smalls, who appears in the tome and was resplendent in a floor-length embroidered Chanel confection. “It’s a great coffee-table book,” she said, as Daria Strokous popped up next to her, taking snapshots with her iPhone.

Just a few feet away, Paré also found a picture-worthy moment and had a friend take a photo of her in front of the image of Anna Mouglalis on display. “My friend thought it was me,” said the Mad Men star, donning a lemon-colored Chanel jacket paired with J Brand jeans and Roger Vivier strappy pumps. Meanwhile, Hannah Bronfman plotted her route to her next stop: the Whitney Art Party. “I was planning on wearing this Prabal Gurung dress there, but I’m not so sure with this weather—hopefully it won’t be raining when we leave,” she said, gazing out of the institute’s foyer. The night wasn’t over, however, until Lagerfeld himself arrived—fashionably late, as usual—about two hours after the cocktail party began. Even though there was hardly any elbow room left in the exhibition space, he parted the crowds, stopping to take a photo with a camera phone. Perhaps one to add to the collection?
