Demi Lovato (20) learned the hard way that sometimes the "forever" part of "best friends forever" means "just until things get rough." In a new interview with the U.K.'s Company magazine, the X Factor judge says she discovered who her true friends were after she spent three months in rehab for "emotional and physical issues" in 2010. 

Lovato, tells the mag she had plenty of pals when things were good. But when things were bad, only a few of those people actually cared enough to stick by her.

"A couple of months before I went to rehab, I had a birthday party, and there were a couple of hundred people there. It was full of people who I considered my closest friends," she says in the interview (via Entertainment Tonight). "When I turned my phone on after being in rehab for three months, I expected lots of text messages and phone calls. I had four texts. That was a wake-up call."

The revelation caused the "Heart Attack" singer -- once good pals with Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus -- to reassess the types of "friends" she let into her inner circle. These days, she says, she surrounds herself only with people she knows will be there for her through thick and thin.

"I don't have loads of friends," she tells the mag. "I used to, but then I realized, do any of them actually care? Now I have people who, if I break my leg in the middle of the night, will come to the hospital with me. Or they'll answer the phone at 4 a.m. if I need them."

With the exception of those trusted few, the former Disney Channel star -- who has been candid about her struggles with bulimia, cutting, and bipolar disorder -- says she tries not to get too involved in other people's drama.

"I don't care about Taylor Swift's love life. I don't care about Harry Styles' love life," Lovato tells Company. "I care about mine. I find it weird that people are so obsessed with other people's love lives!"
